Julian Center Volunteering
In January, we enjoyed a fun afternoon playing games with kids at the Julian Center in Indianapolis - an agency providing relief for battered women and their children. Click here for more information about the Julian Center.
Valentine's Day Party
We hosted a Valentine's Day party for the kids of over 30 refugees from Burma who attend English tutoring classes in Indianapolis. With the help of local sponsors like Marsh Supermarkets and Michael's Stores, Inc. we were able to show these kids what love on Valentine's Day really means.
NC Net Night
On April 9, 2010, we sponsored a 3v3 basketball tournament and carnival with the help of NC Key Club. Several hundred spectators cheered a sold-out roster of 40 teams in a fun, carnival atmosphere. We raised over $3,000 to buy long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets for kids at the New Hope Children's Centre in Uganda. For more information on our project, click here. Members of the Butler Bulldog's 2010 NCAA national championship finals team volunteered as referees for the event. Many thanks to our sponsors: Carter-Lee Lumber, Peace Through Yoga, Broad Ripple Heating, Dick's Sporting Goods, KeyBank, Target, Kroger and the Speedway Moose Lodge.
Bed Net Distribution in Senegal
With collective efforts by students from the French Honor Society at North Central High School, from the International School of San Francisco and from Madrid, Spain, funds were raised to purchase 1,000 anti-malaria mosquito nets for expecting mothers and their children in Senegal. The nets were purchased from the London-based Against Malaria Foundation (www.againstmalaria.com) and shipped to the U.S. Peace Corps office in Dakar. In June, a member of AFC joined three other students from California and Spain to distribute the nets. For more information, follow these links: Distribution Results and Project Documentation.
"Meet & Greet" with Burmese High Schoolers
In September, following our successful 2010 Valentine's Day party for kids of Burmese refugees in Indianapolis, we expanded our efforts to include more high school students. We enjoyed games, talking, food, fun, and some really great soccer!
Trick or Treat for Toiletries Drive
We initiated a drive at North Central High School to collect toiletry items for Burmese refugee children and their families. The school wide effort filled up over 25 grocery bags - providing Exodus Refugee Immigration a 5 month supply of toiletries for Burmese refugees settling in the Indianapolis community. Click here for more information on Exodus Refugee Immigration.
Holiday Party with Burmese Refugees
In December, we shared pies, games and laughter with our Burmese friends. It was really cold outside so we started a four-square competition inside!
Bed Net Distribution in Uganda
There are three million orphans in Uganda and 153 live at New Hope Children's Centre in the village of Katabi Busambaga. With the support of the Washington Township Schools Foundation and several successful fundraisers in 2010, NC AFC committed $3,500 via the Against Malaria Foundation (www.againstmalaria.com) to purchase anti-malaria bed nets for the children at the orphanage as well as day students, staff and their families. By joining forces with other like-minded groups, including the Women Like Us Foundation (www.womenlikeusfoundation.org) and Global Ambassadors for Children (www.ambassadorsforchildren.org), we raised sufficient funds to provide "blanket coverage" for the entire village population around the New Hope Children's Centre.
